Definitions
Representation
– The description or portrayal of someone or something in a
paticular way.
Stereotype
– A widely held but
fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing:
"sexual and racial stereotypes".
Target Audience – Is where you design something for a specific group of
people. For example, if a magazine is designed for 16-19 year olds. Primary
audience is the first audience something is aimed at. For example, the film Toy
Story is naturally aimed at children so that would be the primary audience.
Secondary audience is the second audience something is aimed at. For example,
the secondary audience for Toy Story would be young adults and adults.
Language – Every medium has it’s own combination of languages that it
uses to communcation meaning. For example, television uses verbal and written
language as well as the languages of moving images and sound.
Institution – A society or organization founded for a religious,
educational, social, or similar purpose.
Genre – A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature,
characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. For example,
in music the different genre’s would be rock, indie, pop, classical and many
more.
Conventions – A way in which something is usually done, esp. within a
particular area or activity.
Denotation – The literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the
feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
Cover lines – Are short statements found on the cover.
Left side third – A lot of important information designed to attract
potential readers is placed in the left-hand side vertical third of the front
cover.
Masthead – The title of a newspaper or magazine at the head of the front
or editorial page
Puff – A piece of writing, as on
the jacket of a book, containing often exaggerated praise, used for promotional
purposes.
Pug – A commendation, especially an exaggerated one, of a book, an actor’s performance, etc.
Sell lines – Something on the magazine that would entice the audience to buy it.
Connotation – An idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
